If you were in Alan Pardew’s shoes tonight when Bordeaux visit St James’ Park, who would you pick in your starting XI to take on the in-form French side? Do we field the strongest side possible? Or do we save some of the top stars ahead of the visit of Man United on Sunday? Leave a comment below and have your say!

Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Harper

Simpson Perch Williamson Santon

Cabaye Tiote Anita

Ben Arfa Cisse Amalfitano

I’d pick a very strong side to take on Bordeaux, with nearly all of the top players coming back into the side. After all, what’s the point in working so hard to qualify last season if we aren’t going to have a real go at whoever stands in our way?

The back four picks itself, with whoever is fit starting. Steven Taylor is injured, meaning Williamson and Perch are the only options, unless Fabricio Coloccini can shake off an injury in time.

I’d pick Anita and Tiote in midfield with Cabaye, as the extra holding midfielder could thwart Bordeaux’s attacking playmakers, limiting chances on the counter attack.

Ben Arfa would make his European debut for me, with Cisse partnering him up front, and Romain Amalfitano playing on the left wing. Amalfitano hasn’t had much of a chance so far (probably because Pardew doesn’t know his best position) but tonight could be a chance to shine for the 23-year old. Finally, I’d pick Cisse over Ba because we can rest Demba for the weekend, while giving Cisse the chance to grab some goals without the pressure of out-performing his Senegal team-mate.
