If you were in Alan Pardew’s shoes tonight, who would you pick for the game against Anzhi? Does Papiss Cisse start up front? Does Haidara keep his place ahead of Santon? Leave a comment below and have your say!

Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Elliot

Simpson S.Taylor Yanga-Mbiwa Haidara

Tiote Cabaye

Gutierrez Sissoko Marveaux

Cisse

I’d make minimal changes to the side we have been used to seeing in the Premier League in the last few weeks. Danny Simpson is the obvious choice for the right-back slot, while Sylvain Marveaux is in prime position to replace the ineligible Yoan Gouffran.

Cisse is the only man to lead the line, although the stage could be set for a local hero to come off the bench and remind us why we all love him. Shola Ameobi is ready and waiting for what should be a magical night on Tyneside.

How about a team which could attack and defend, a difficult team to beat.

    Elliot
    Simpson S.Taylor Yanga-Mbiwa Haidara
    Tiote Cabaye
    Santon Sissoko Gutierrez
    Cisse

    Pretty good team.

I still don't get why people don't want Marveaux to start. He is such a great player..

I worry about the possibility of a score-draw putting Anzi through at our expense. I am sure Guus is counting on it. NUFC have to WIN – that means two goals minimum, while striving to keep a clean sheet. But, where will the goals come from?!? How will we shore up all the gaps if we try to attack and push forward?!?
I agree that Cisse has to start, he isn't an impact sub, unlike Shola who may not have the class, but has the arse and greater versatility – his large presence can force Anzi to have to mark him, while being able to do at least some 'forward-defensive' work. If Shola is put on its either "We're trying to stop hemorrhaging goals" or "We're desperately trying to do something, anything really." Either way, it's not a statement of confidence. Yet Cisse doesn't inspire me that NUFC will get two goals.
Without Gouffran and the second striker we never picked up in Jan, we have virtually nothing left. All our attacking midfield options will already be on the pitch with Marveaux, Cabaye & Sissoko. (Obertan is too inconsistent and any of the juniors are too raw.) So, these three all have to push forward, as we desperately need one of them to get a goal at the very least, especially given our play from set pieces and corners has been diabolical. That means Tiote (until he gets red carded and sent off) and Anita have to break up the Anzi attack and protect the back four. They have to be really disciplined – possibly not beyond them on their day. The back four probably should include Haidara instead of Santon (on current form). Their performance will be the real lynch pin to winning, since we need to keep that clean sheet, because we are unlikely to get the two goals from our current forward set up. So :
    Elliot
    Simpson / Saylor / MYM / Haidara
    Tiote / Anita
    Marveaux / Sissoko / Cabaye
    Cisse
