If you were in Alan Pardew’s shoes tomorrow, who would you pick in your starting XI to take on Southampton? Who replaces Hatem Ben Arfa as the creative spark in midfield? Who replaces Yohan Cabaye? Who starts up front? Leave a comment below and have your say!

Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Krul

Simpson Williamson S. Taylor Santon

Gutierrez Anita Tiote Marveaux

Ba Cisse

It’s a case of piecing together a team of whoever is left standing tomorrow, as injuries prevent a much stronger line up. There is a possibility that neither of Gutierrez or Cisse could start, meaning Shane Ferguson could come in on the left wing, and Sammy Ameobi could start up front with Demba Ba.

The main problem tomorrow is the lack of creativity left by the absence of Ben Arfa and Cabaye, but hopefully some of the fringe players can step up to the plate and deliver. Sylvain Marveaux in particular needs to show what he can do and build on the goal he scored in the Europea League on Thursday.

Jonas Gutierrez has been quiet in an attacking sense this year but could have a chance to provide something tomorrow if he gets an outing on the wing, providing ammunition for Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse if the latter starts.

I think that I would plump for:

    krul

    santon willo taylor ferguson

    gutierrez anita tiote marveaux

    ba cisse

If Gutierrez is unavailable, I would be tempted to give amalfitano a go.
Whilst I respect Pardew and his tactics, I feel that Southampton are ripe for the picking and some of the ways in which they have been exposed are:

getting in behind the full back and low crosses causing havoc. 2 strikers and a mid hitting the 6 yrd box and the pen spot off a low cross have caused issues with the rigid defensive formation that adkins has set out.

outside-in, getting the ball wide, dragging the full back out and then having a midfielder hitting the inside channel. Ordinarily I would not place gutierrez on the right but I think his movement may suit this tactic. Another reason for picking amalfitano ahead of sammy ameobi, sammy's movement is eratic. often handy, but not as planned regularly enough. The 2 up top need to know when to move and what areas to hit, sammy cannot provide that.

note that there is no long ball tactic – we are not a tall enough side to battle once its in the air, god help us against sturk!

Won't be long before we pick the first 11 through the door. Really, really bad upper management by them upstairs, considering everyone knew we would have so much pressure this season.
Hopefully, upstairs will realise wer'e not just selling crap T shirts here and finance some serious strengthening this next window. However, I have massive doubts. Howaaaaaaaaaaaaay the Lads.

This providing the game doesnt come too soon for guti an perch. Ferguson and santon can be a threat down the left flank and fergies got good deliveries, i cant say the same about simpson which is why his name is nowhere to be seen, maybe tulisa could show him how to kick/cross an control a football! Anita also looks good goin forward from right back an should combine well with jonas, gotta give the 2 dembas better service, cisse just needs a goal or 2 to boost his confidence an we’ll see him back to his best, perch an tiote would provide the steal in the middle of the park
