If you were in Alan Pardew’s shoes tomorrow when Sunderland make the trip up the A19, who would be in your starting line-up for the 151st Tyne-Wear derby? Who plays in goal? Who partners Fabricio Coloccini at centre-back? Who leads the line up front? Leave a comment below and have your say! Here’s what I’ve come up with: Alnwick Janmaat – S.Taylor – Coloccini – Dummett Sissoko – Tiote – Colback Cabella – Cisse – Ameobi Firstly, I’d go with as many local lads as possible. They understand the meaning of the derby and in recent years, some of Newcastle’s failures has been put down, in part, to too much foriegn influence. Dummett at left-back is an obvious choice for his defensive abilities and Steven Taylor would partner Coloccini at the back. Mike Williamson has been poor lately and Taylor’s run in the team earlier in the season coincided with four clean sheets, so he is another straightforward choice. I’d have three in midfield, with Tiote anchoring the centre and Colback and Sissoko pulling the strings. Sissoko was excellent against Spurs on Wednesday and another big performance is needed. The hardest choice for me would be the inclusion of Cabella or Perez but I’d go with the Frenchman because of his ability to unlock defences. He hasn’t been on top form but playing in front of a derby-day crowd could just inspire him to find his best form. Equally, the occasion may get to him, so Perez coming on early from the bench could be a good option. With no one else available, Jak Alnwick will continue in goal. He needs to show huge character and not go missing on the biggest day of his career. An early catch from a free-kick or corner will do him the world of good. What do you think?
