If you were in John Carver’s shoes today when Southampton arrive in town, who would you pick in your Newcastle team to take on the Saints? Does Remy Cabella continue after his fine performance against Chelsea? Who plays in defence? Leave a comment below and have your say!

Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Krul

Janmaat – Coloccini – Dummett – Haidara

Colback – Anita

Cabella – Sissoko – Ameobi

Perez

I’d go with a similar side to the one that played so well against Chelsea in the first half last week, with only two changes.

First, I’d play Paul Dummett ahead of Mike Williamson at centre-back with Massadio Haidara coming in at left-back. The Frenchman offers more pace and a greater attacking threat, which could be key at home against Southampton’s wingers, who don’t track back brilliantly.

Sammy Ameobi would get my pick ahead of Yoan Gouffran on the left of midfield. The Frenchman has been better recently but the pace and direct approach of Ameobi would be best suited at home.

Remy Cabella and Moussa Sissoko complete the midfield three that supports Ayoze Perez up front, with expectation on Cabella particularly high. His performance against Chelsea was excellent and with Southampton being without their first-choice defensive midfielders and one of their centre-backs, there could be another chance for Cabella to perform.
