If you were in Alan Pardew’s shoes tonight, who would be in your team to play Gillingham in the Capital One Cup tonight? How many youngsters get a game? Who replaces Mike Williamson at centre-back? Leave a comment below and have your say!

Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Elliot

Janmaat – S.Taylor – Yanga-Mbiwa – Haidara

Colback – Abeid

Obertan – de Jong – Aarons

Ayoze

I’d pick a fairly strong XI tonight, with two players starting the game that started against Villa at the weekend. Daryl Janmaat at right-back and Jack Colback in midfield.

Siem de Jong is returning to full fitness after injury and a start would get him some match sharpness back and also allows the team to play the preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, with de Jong as number 10.

I’d start Ayoze Perez up front because he has looked excellent when playing there in pre-season and has showed good form early in the season, too. Rolando Aarons and Gabriel Obertan have similar stories and I’d start them on the wings.

Mike Willamson’s place at centre-back would go to Steven Taylor, while I’d also give Yanga-Mbiwa a chance despite looking poor in pre-season.

I would go with pretty much our strongest 11, give the attacking players a chance to get some confidence before Palace on Saturday, and De Jong 90 Minutes under his belt and another game to build the chemistry with the new players. Aarons comes in as he very much deserves the chance, same with Haidara, Taylor comes in for suspended Williamson.
