Former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has signed for a new club – Turkish Division 1 side Gaziantep Buyuksehir Belediyespor.

The 32-year-old spent almost 20 years at St James’ Park before deciding to move on this summer and Gaziantep were the ones who won the race for the powerful Nigerian.

It comes as something of a surprise to many that Shola opted for Turkey, as a number of English sides were credited with interest in him.

A move to the MLS looked the most likely option after the World Cup but Ameobi will ply his trade one league below the likes of Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and Besiktas for the next year at least. Gaziantep finished 14th in the 18-team league last season.
