So the season is over and the transfer rumour mill is in full swing, with The Magpies being linked to new players on a daily basis as they look to build a squad capable of challenging in next season’s Europa League, as well as the Premier League. The biggest ongoing story is Lille right-back Mathieu Debuchy, who was widely expected to join Newcastle as soon as Euro 2012 was finished and France were sent packing. However, a series of highly impressive performances from the 26-year old have alerted some of Europe’s big boys to the availability of Debuchy and now Alan Pardew faces a fight for the highly-rated defender. Valencia and Manchester United are two of the many destinations being touted for Debuchy, however at the time of writing, Newcastle are the only ones to have submitted a concrete offer. The bid could well spark something of an auction for the Frenchman but one big advantage that Newcastle hold over any other club is that Debuchy’s best friend is Yohan Cabaye, who moved from Lille to Tyneside a year ago and has proved a huge hit with the Geordie faithful since signing for £4.3m. Whether Debuchy will turn down bigger clubs with Champions League football to offer in order to follow his former colleague to England is yet to be seen but the rumour is certainly one for Geordies to get excited over in the coming weeks. Debuchy isn’t the only full-back to be linked with a move to Newcastle in the past few weeks though, as chief scout Graham Carr has been scouring Holland and France to find a suitable defender to bolster the relatively thin Newcastle back line. Ajax left-back Vurnon Anita has been one of the names linked and it is reported that Pardew has tested the water with a £4m bid for the diminutive defender, although Ajax have rejected it as the offer falls way short of their valuation for the 23-year old. A possible alternative should Anita stay at Ajax is PSV Eindhoven left-back Erik Pieters, who almost joined Newcastle in January of last year before staying put in Holland. Pieters would have been in the Dutch Euro 2012 squad had he not been injured and as a result his price could be lower, having not had the chance to bump it up in the summer months. Pieters is a more defensive option than Anita, standing at 6’1” and more defensively able than Anita. So with these rumours it looks like we can expect defensive reinforcements over the summer for Pardew and co. especially in the full back department. One of the positive things is that the Magpies manager can move for a full back from either side, thanks to the versatility of Davide Santon. If Graham Carr can’t find a suitable left-back for his boss (which you would think he’d prefer) he can easily switch his attention to a right-back, with Santon filling whichever position is vacant. A striker is also on Pardew’s shopping list, with some very promising names being linked with a move to the north-east. First to be touted was FC Twente striker Luuk De Jong, who carries a reputation as one of the finest young strikers in the world. The 21-year old scored 25 goals last season and has been attracting interest from Liverpool amongst others. Many feel that De Jong should have been in the Dutch national squad this summer, although Bert Van Maarwijk decided against the 6’2” hit man. Reports that Newcastle have offered £8m for De Jong are supposedly true however the Dutch club want at least double that for the young striker. The next striker being linked with a move to Tyneside is 20-year old Manchester City man John Guidetti. Scoring 20 goals in 23 games for Feyenoord last season, Guidetti scores for fun and could be a replacement if Demba Ba decides to move on. It looks like Guidetti won’t get the chance to establish himself in the City first team any time soon and Newcastle want to swoop early, before he has the chance to score more in other leagues and attract more concrete interest from big clubs. So despite the lack of Premier League football over the summer months, Newcastle fans will not be bored with the amount of transfer rumours circulating. At least two defenders and one striker will be expected for the Magpies, with a winger also being talked about too. Looks like an exciting summer for all Geordies!
