A late goal from Remy Cabella earned Newcastle United a 2-2 draw with Huddersfield Town in the Magpies’ penultimate pre-season friendly.

Emmanuel Riviere had given the visitors an early lead before goals from Radoslaw Majewski and Jon Stead put the Terriers ahead but Cabella struck two minutes from time to save the Geordies.

Backed by a vociferous travelling Toon Army of over 1,500, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew named another strong line-up against Mark Robins’ side and awarded a first start for new loan signing Facundo Ferreyra. He was joined up front by Riviere and the Frenchman opened the scoring after the quarter-hour mark.

An all-French move down the right wing involving Cabella and Yoan Gouffran resulted in the latter firing a superb low cross across the box for the former Monaco striker to apply an unorthodox finish.

It was Riviere’s third goal of pre-season but it wasn’t enough to kill off the home side, who equalised 20 minutes later when former Nottingham Forest midfielder Majewski turned on the edge of the box and curled a shot into Tim Krul’s top corner.

Huddersfield named an entirely different– and more youthful looking – line-up for the second half and began brightly. 20-year-old Duane Holmes tested Krul with a low strike before one of Town’s more experienced strikers put them ahead.

Stead, who started his career at Town and had a spell at Sunderland, got between Fabricio Coloccini and substitute Steven Taylor and fired a slightly deflected shot past Krul to give Huddersfield the lead.

It looked like ending level until Cabella’s stunning eqauliser two minutes from time. Substitute Ayoze Perez was hauled down by two defenders but had the quick wit to take the free kick swiftly and put Cabella through on goal.

The Frenchman scored his first goal for Newcastle in the win over Schalke on Sunday and followed up that fine finish with another as he lifted his shot casually over Joe Murphy in the home goal.

Newcastle’s pre-season campaign comes to a conclusion on Sunday when they return to St James’ Park to take on Real Sociedad before kicking off their Premier League campaign against Manchester City a week later.

Pardew has been one of the Premier League’s busiest managers during the summer recruiting almost an entire team after last season’s second half collapse.

Remy Cabella, Siem De Jong, Daryl Janmaat, Emmanuel Riviere, Jack Colback, Ayose Perez and Facundo Ferreyra have all arrived this summer.
