Newcastle United begin their pre-season preparations tonight with a trip to Greater Manchester to take on Oldham Athletic. Alan Pardew will be able to see what kind of shape his squad is in after two weeks of training following the summer break. New signings may be on show at the SportsDirect.com Park – formerly known as Boundary Park until Newcastle owner Mike Ashley bought the naming rights for the stadium. Siem de Jong, Ayoze Perez and Jack Colback are in the squad but Remy Cabella has gone back on holiday after being with France for the World Cup. Daryl Janmaat will likely have signed for the Magpies before the game kicks off but won’t be involved. The game could see Ryan Taylor make his first appearance for the Geordies for almost two years after a pair of serious knee ligament injuries. The former Wigan defender has also taken the vacant number four shirt at Newcastle after Yohan Cabaye’s departure rendered the number untaken. Speaking of shirt numbers, there has been no official allocation for Cabella, de Jong, Perez or Colback but there have been strong rumours that de Jong will take the number 10 shirt – currently occupied by Hatem Ben Arfa. The Frenchman is expected to leave St James’ Park this summer and de Jong taking his number is a sign that his days on Tyneside are limited. In training this week Colback has been wearing number 14 (formerly of Loic Remy), the number he wore at Sunderland last season. After the Oldham game, Newcastle jet to New Zealand to take on two sides from the Southern Hemisphere, before returning to England to take on Sheffield Wednesday. The squad then fly to Germany to compete in the Schalke Cup against Malaga and host side Schalke 04 before coming home for games against Huddersfield Town and Real Sociedad.
