In rather unsurprising news, Newcastle are set to allow flop midfielder Romain Amalfitano to leave  the club once he returns from his loan spell at Ligue 2 side Dijon.

The Frenchman joined the Magpies on a free transfer from Reims in 2012 but failed to adjust to the English game and only made a handful of appearances for Newcastle in the Europa League.

Newcastle then farmed him out on loan to Dijon, where he has became a first-team regular and helped them to a sixth place finish last season. It is understood that Dijon are interested in making Amalfitano’s move permanent.

In all honesty, Amalfitano’s time at Newcastle may go down as one of the most pointless transfers in Magpies history. Clearly not as talented as his older brother Morgan – the 24-year-old may have more chance of being a decent pub quiz answer than a Premier League player.
