Ryan Taylor’s return to fitness and form continued in fine style as he scored twice for Newcastle’s under 21 side against Stoke last night.

The former Wigan defender was included in Peter Beardsley’s team as one of the overage players and his experience showed as he netted two spectacular strikes to send the u21’s to the top of the table.

His first was particularly special, as he made ground down the left before cutting back onto his stronger right foot and curling a stunning effort into the top corner just before the half hour mark.

The night may have been spoiled slightly as Taylor then turned a cross into his own net but just minutes later, he restored Newcastle’s lead with a trademark free kick.

Beardsley’s side boasted six players who have all been part of first-team squads in recent years but arguably the best player on the pitch – Taylor aside – was Callum Roberts.

The winger caught the eye with a promising display in front of the Sky cameras and will be hoping he is the latest young talent to break into the Magpies first team – after the likes of Adam Armstrong and Rolando Aarons.
