As the transfer rumour mill shifts into top gear in the past fortnight, the latest player to be linked with a move to St James’ Park is PSV Eindhoven striker, Ola Toivonen. The 25-year old Swede has been a hit at PSV since joining the Dutch giants from Swedish side Malmo three years ago and has caught the eye of Toon chief scout Graham Carr. Toivonen has 26 caps for Sweden (scoring 6 goals) and is a target man striker with a deft touch and excellent aerial play. At 6’2”, Toivonen has an eye for a pass as well as good goal scoring record and can play as a second striker thanks to his playmaking ability. It seems Toon attention has turned to Toivonen after FC Twente refused to meet Newcastle’s valuation of star striker Luuk De Jong. The Dutchman likely won’t leave Twente for anything less than £15m, some way off the amount the Magpies are willing to pay to lure De Jong to Tyneside. Toivonen is almost certainly Alan Pardew’s second choice forward, although he does still have the potential to be a hit on Tyneside. His scoring record is decent but seeing as though the Premier League is much tougher to make an impact in, Geordies who have seen both targets play will be hoping it is De Jong who will make the switch to England in the near future.
