Swansea City have identified Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse as their number one target following the sale of Wilfried Bony to Manchester City.

The former Vitesse striker has joined the Premier League champions for £30m and Swansea’s second-choice forward, Bafetimbi Gomis, is also being linked with a move away from the Liberty Stadium.

That leaves Swans boss Garry Monk with a void to fill and he has sounded out Cisse. The Senegal striker scored twice earlier in the season against Monk’s side and Swansea could be prepared to test Newcastle’s desire to keep their top scorer with a £9m move.

29-year-old Cisse has two and a half years left on his current deal and it’s hard to see the temptation in moving to Swansea, who won’t offer European football or a realistic push for the top six.

Cisse is currently away on international duty with Senegal in the African Nations Cup and leads Newcastle’s scoring charts with nine goals this season.
