Papiss Cisse will miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken kneecap in the game against Swansea.

The Senegal striker was taken off after 21 minutes against Garry Monk’s side and will not feature again this season as he faces a lengthy layoff.

It means the former Freiburg forward will finish the season with just two Premier League goals to his name, one in the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace earlier this year and a penalty against Stoke City on Boxing Day.

Luckily for Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, Loic Remy has returned to the first-team after a calf injury, so will be a straightforward replacement for Cisse.

The Frenchman will need a new partner up front though, with Luuk de Jong and Shola Ameobi vying for the empty slot in the Toon attack. De Jong is yet to break his Magpies duck in front of goal, while Ameobi’s first league goal of the season came against Swansea at the weekend.
