Jonas Gutierrez continued his comeback by netting a stunning goal for Newcastle’s under 21’s last night, as Peter Beardsley’s side drew 1-1 with Bolton and remained top of Division 2.

The Argentine – sporting a new short haircut – was part of a strong under 21 line-up, which boasted seven players with first-team experience and slammed in a shot from outside the box after 11 minutes.

The 31-year-old got through 90 minutes without any issues and is closing in on a return to the first team squad after successfully overcoming testicular cancer.

Gutierrez’s contract situation still remains unclear, with rumours of his next appearance for the Magpies triggering an automatic one-year extension – something Newcastle bosses are unwilling to commit to.

Alan Pardew made a hash of managing the situation over the last six months but with him now at Crystal Palace, Gutierrez may feel the door to the first team may have reopened.

With a new manager set to be appointed at St James’ Park in the coming weeks, Jonas’s situation could be one to watch. Newcastle are currently struggling for fully fit wingers and with a newly-motivated Spiderman in their ranks, a fairytale comeback could be on the cards.
