New Newcastle signing Siem de Jong is set to take the number 10 shirt at St James’ Park and all but end Hatem Ben Arfa’s time on Tyneside.

The Frenchman fell out of favour with Alan Pardew last season and reports of a number of dressing room bust-ups culminated in the former Marseille winger being left out of the side regularly.

And now the arrival of de Jong could see Ben Arfa’s number 10 shirt go, with the former Ajax captain set to be given the number by Pardew, who is keen to offload the unhappy Frenchman.

De Jong wore the number 10 in his time at Ajax and the club left his options open when releasing pictures of the Dutchman to the media, as he posed with a Newcastle shirt with his name but no number on.

There should be plenty of interest in Ben Arfa, who is understandably keen to move on amid the ill feeling between him and Pardew. With the manager comfortable with an eight-year contract, it leaves Ben Arfa as the loser when it comes to confrontation.

Ben Arfa’s fellow Frenchman Mathieu Debuchy is expected to complete his move to Arsenal as soon as France’s World Cup campaign comes to an end. That may happen tonight as Didier Deschamps’ side take on Germany in the quarter-final, meaning Debuchy could be a Gunner by the end of next week.

There is also interest in Moussa Sissoko following his impressive World Cup performances, with Napoli keen on his services. Former Liverpool and Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez has been rumoured to be interested in making a move for the former Toulouse man, who is apparently unhappy with the weather in Newcastle and would like to play in a warmer climate.
