Shola Ameobi’s 19-year Newcastle United career is certain to come to an end this summer, after the Geordie veteran turned down an offer to extend his stay into a 20th season.

That means Ameobi’s last action in a black and white shirt was being sent off at Anfield for questioning Phil Dowd’s decision to book him, hardly a fitting way to end a near 400 appearance Toon career.

Rumours have linked Ameobi with a move to Premier League outfits Hull City and newly promoted Burnley but a move away from England is more expected. Ameobi will hope a good showing for Nigeria in the World Cup can earn him contract offers from abroad, with MLS clubs and big-spending UAE sides bound to be interested.

Aside from six appearances while on loan at Stoke City in 2008, Ameobi has spent his entire career at Newcastle and has scored 53 senior goals for the Magpies.
