Erik Pieters’ goal downed Newcastle to their fourth straight defeat yesterday, here’s how we rated the Magpies’ performances.

Tim Krul, 5 – Unfortunate as the wind assisted Pieters’ goal.

Steven Taylor, 5 – Three at the back system didn’t suit him. Taken off with a muscle strain.

Mike Williamson, 5 – Struggled to keep Peter Crouch under control all afternoon.

Fabricio Coloccini, 5 – Perhaps should have been the one organising the makeshift defence system better.

Vurnon Anita, 3 – Given no chance by his manager at right wing-back. Never played there in his life and was taken apart by Pieters and Arnautovic.

Paul Dummett, 4 – Totally ineffective as Pardew’s system failed miserably.

Cheick Tiote, 6 – Battled away well and was up for it. Unfortunately seemed to be the only one.

Dan Gosling, 5 – Looked encouraging but inexplicably missed a sitter in the first half.

as Pardew’s system failed miserably.

Yoan Gouffran, 2 – The biggest failure in Pardew’s line-up. Like Anita, had no chance in the position he was played.

Papiss Cisse, 5 – Quiet. No chances for him because there was no creativity.

Shola Ameobi, 6 – Done OK with the route one approach but didn’t look like scoring.
