Ayoze Perez staked his claim for a first-team starting spot by scoring four goals against Carlisle United in a training ground friendly against the Cumbrians yesterday.

The Spaniard has made a series of substitute appearances for Newcastle since joining in the summer from Tenerife but was left out of the squad that travelled to Stoke on Monday night.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew said after the Stoke game that there will be changes to the first-team when Newcastle travel to Swansea this weekend and Perez’s goals could mean he gets a maiden start for his new club.

The 21-year-old scored all four of his goals in the first 45 minutes of the friendly game, before being substituted at half-time. The other goals came from Mehdi Abeid (2), Haris Vuckic and Facundo Ferreyra – who has never made it onto the pitch in a Newcastle shirt since joining on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Also playing in the game was Ryan Taylor, who enjoyed his first game back after a two-year absence. The former Wigan defender has missed the last two seasons with the same knee ligament injury but will be hoping to return to the first team in the coming months.
