Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has insisted that new signing Ayoze Perez is “one for now”, after the Spaniard scored his first Toon goal in the 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday last night.

The 21-year-old stole the show at Hillsborough with a fine performance and when asked if Perez was one for the future, Pardew insisted his new man can make an impact in the coming season.

Starting on the left of midfield against the Owls, Perez was full of deft touches and neat skill before moving up front in the second half and scoring the only goal of the game.

As is usually the case with young players signed from foreign clubs, the question over Perez is whether he can settle quickly and start producing his best form for his new club. Many youngsters struggle with the new environment and language but Perez has made a bright start, with a number of promising performances in pre-season.

He took his goal well against Wednesday, slotting past former England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland confidently when one on one. To get through, he timed his run through the Owls’ defence perfectly and his pace was always going to be enough to get him away from the chasing defenders.

The Spaniard’s form certainly seems to have impressed Pardew, who seems keen to use the former Tenerife striker in his first team plans this season.

It would be a surprise to see Perez start many games in the opening weeks of the new Premier League season but with his pace and skill, Pardew may have found a go-to man in the shape of the Spaniard.
