Alan Pardew has hinted that he will make changes to his Newcastle side when they take on Manchester United this weekend.

The Magpies are coming off the back of a 4-0 beating at the hands of Southampton and go into the Man United game needing points to stop their season from petering out.

Newcastle are currently ninth in the Premier League, six points ahead of 10th-placed Stoke and two behind Southampton.

Pardew told the Chronicle: “We certainly looked like we needed some freshening up. I will have to look at that against Man United.”

The changes could include a return to the first-team for Davide Santon, who replaced Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at right-back at half-time in the Southampton game. Shola Ameobi could also start against the 20-time Premier League champions, while forgotten winger Sylvain Marveaux may also be included.

“We don’t want our season to fizzle out. We have ourselves in a position now after two big defeats [against Southampton and Everton] where we have to have a big response.
