Former Newcastle United midfielder Conor Newton has signed for Rotherham United. Newton had spent the 2013/14 season on loan at St. Mirren and hoped to be given a new contract at St James’ Park but Toon chiefs decided against renewing the midfielder’s deal. The 22-year-old turned attracted interest from Championship sides Wolves, Millwall and Birmingham but opted to sign for Rotherham, who hope to be in the Championship after Sunday’s League One playoff final, when they take on Leyton Orient. Newton will undoubtedly have been given favourable reviews from former team mates James Tavernier and Haris Vuckic, who have both spent the season on loan at the New York Stadium and hope to be part of the side that gets the Millers promoted. Despite spending 13 years at Newcastle in the youth and reserve sides, Newton never managed a senior appearance for the Magpies and moves on to South Yorkshire to play regular first-team football and kick-start his career.
