Newcastle United midfielder Siem de Jong is back in light training after a thigh injury.

The Dutchman is not expected to return to the first-team until the New Year but has been given the green light to step up his recovery, after tearing his thigh muscle in August.

Since signing for the Magpies from Ajax in the summer, 25-year-old de Jong has only played 167 minutes of first-team football before injury curtailed his involvement.

De Jong looked impressive in pre-season, scoring a stunning goal against Oldham in his first appearance for his new club, before netting on Newcastle’s tour of New Zealand.
