After their Derby Day embarrassment, Newcastle return to action in the Capital One Cup tonight when Manchester City visit St James’ Park for a 4th Round clash.

Hardly the type of opposition you want to face after a demoralising loss, Newcastle will likely field a mix of first-team and fringe players to take on the former league winners, with a Saturday lunchtime game against Chelsea next up.

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa returns from a one-match ban and may start alongside Mike Williamson in defence, with Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini still out with injuries. Alan Pardew has confirmed Cheick Tiote will continue as captain against Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

After Moussa Sissoko was hooked at half time against Sunderland, his place may be taken by Vurnon Anita in the starting line up. There could also be starts for fellow fringe men Sylvain Marveaux and Shola Ameobi.

Papiss Cisse is likely to start up front for Newcastle, while there could be a first appearance of the season for Massadio Haidara, who has recovered from injury and been declared match fit.

After Joe Hart made another high profile blunder against Chelsea at the weekend, Pellegrini is likely to drop the England keeper for cup duty, with Romanian stopper Costel Pantilimon his replacement. The 6’8” goalie has only made a handful of appearances for City but could be on the verge of a place in the first team should he impress tonight.

Vincent Kompany is struggling with a thigh injury and is unlikely to be risked for City, as Pellegrini prepares to make changes to his side for the cup competition. Stevan Jovetic is a likely starter, along with Edin Dzeko, Aleksander Kolarov and Jesus Navas.

Extra time and penalties will be utilised if necessary to determine who takes a place in the 5th round.
