Newcastle United’s latest quest for silverware begins tonight as the Magpies travel to Priestfield for the Capital One Cup Second Round game with League One side Gillingham.

A result must be achieved on the night, meaning extra time and penalties will be utilised if the teams cannot be separated after 90 minutes.

As is customary with league cup games, a number of changes are expected in the Newcastle line-up but manager Alan Pardew did say after the Aston Villa game that the same squad would travel to Gillingham, so a strong team is still expected.

There could be a first competitive start for Ayoze Perez, while fellow new boys Siem de Jong and Facundo Ferreyra could also be involved. Mehdi Abeid is expected to start, while Mike Williamson is suspended following his dismissal at Villa Park.

Rob Elliot will likely be in goal and there could be an appearance for Rolando Aarons, who was not part of the weekend squad but has impressed in pre-season. Hatem Ben Arfa played for the under 21 side on Monday and scored one and set up three in a 5-2 victory, with Pardew watching from the stands. The Frenchman is not expected to be involved at Gillingham though.

Gillingham were stuffed 4-1 by Barnsley at the weekend and have won only one of their first four league games. Peter Taylor’s side made it to the second round of the league cup by beating Yeovil Town 2-1 in the first round two weeks ago.
