Tonight sees Newcastle continue their League Cup campaign, with an 8 o’clock kickoff at Crystal Palace. The two sides played out a 3-3 draw just two weeks ago in the Premier League, with a last-minute Wilfried Zaha goal denying Newcastle their first league win of the season. Since then, Palace have beaten Everton at Goodison Park and drawn with Burnley while Newcastle have been hammered at Southampton and drawn with Hull City. As expected in the league cup, changes are expected to the teams and there could be chances for fringe players in both sides. Also affecting Alan Pardew’s team selection is a sickness bug that has ruled out Tim Krul, Yoan Gouffran and Papiss Cisse, so there will be no start for the man who scored twice to rescue a point at St James’ Park on Saturday. That means Rob Elliot will start in goal and Sammy Ameobi may get a start on the left wing. Rolando Aarons, Adam Armstrong, Davide Santon, Siem de Jong and Adam Campbell are all injured, while loan signing Facundo Ferreyra has reportedly not travelled with the squad despite not making an appearance since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer transfer window. For Palace, striker Marouane Chamakh is a major doubt but new signing Zeki Fryers could make his debut at left-back. Boss Neil Warnock has said that a number of fringe players will be allowed to leave the club on loan after tonight’s game. As is the way with the Capital One Cup, a winner must be decided on the night and extra time and penalties will be used if necessary.
