After gaining plaudits but no points against Manchester City last weekend, Newcastle United attempt to get their first points of the season with an early kick-off against Aston Villa tomorrow.

Toon boss Alan Pardew will be boosted by the return to the squad of Siem de Jong, after the Dutch summer signing missed the 0-2 defeat to City with a leg injury picked up in pre-season.

The former Ajax captain may not be fit to start the game but should play some part, meaning a change in formation may be in order. De Jong plays as a number 10, meaning last week’s 4-3-3 system may need to change to accommodate the 25-year-old.

Pardew will have to cope without Cheick Tiote once again, as question marks begin to rise about his injury. Bids are coming in from clubs wanting to sign Tiote and the whole situation smacks similar to the one that saw Yohan Cabaye miss the start of last season.

Papiss Cisse remains at least a fortnight from returning to training, while Davide Santon’s knee injury has suffered a setback and the Italian may be missing until November. Ryan Taylor is closing in on match fitness and could be involved in the squad tomorrow. Hatem Ben Arfa’s exclusion from the first team picture will continue.

Loan signing Facundo Ferreyra may be in line to make his Newcastle debut after scoring for the under 21 side on Monday night.

Villa’s season got off to a winning start last weekend as they took three points from their trip to Stoke City, with former Newcastle transfer target Andreas Weimann bagging the winner.

Paul Lambert has been in the transfer market this week and completed the signing of Elche midfielder Carlos Sanchez, who will be in line to make his debut. Joe Cole could also make his bow after missing the win against Stoke with a thigh problem.

Striking duo Libor Kozak and Christian Benteke are both missing, while defender Jores Okore remains a couple of weeks from fitness after a long-term knee injury.

Newcastle have taken all three points from Villa Park on their last two league visits, with Hatem Ben Arfa striking the winner last season.
