Newcastle United are considering a shock move for forgotten Aston Villa striker Darren Bent.

The former England forward spent last season on loan at Fulham but couldn’t help them avoid relegation in the handful of appearances he made for the Cottagers.

Alan Pardew’s first interest in the 30-year-old came before Bent joined Villa, when the Magpies were linked with a £6m bid for the former Sunderland man.

But now the Toon boss could reignite his interest as he looks to rebuild his attacking options after losing loanees Loic Remy and Luuk de Jong and preparing to see off Shola Ameobi, who is out of contract.

Papiss Cisse could also miss the start of the season with a broken kneecap, allowing Bent a chance to resurrect his career. Newcastle are preparing a cut-price bid for the striker, who could provide experience and competition to the Magpies’ new-look front line.
