Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has been diagnosed with testicular cancer.

The Argentina international was on loan at Norwich City for the second half of last season but only made a handful of appearances after Chris Hughton was sacked.

After returning to Newcastle, Gutierrez was allowed to return to Argentina to receive treatment for the illness and had the cancerous testicle removed in a bid to control the disease. His trademark long hair has been shaved as the chemotherapy started.

The 31-year old has a contract with Newcastle until the end of the season but is not expected to make a return to the club for some time as he battles the illness.

We wish him all the best and hope to see the Spiderman mask at St James’ Park once again very soon.

NOTE: Since the story about Jonas broke last night, there are a lot of contradicting reports circulating. Some are saying that Gutierrez was “sent away” by Newcastle after learning of his illness but as the interview was conducted in Argentine, the meaning of the quote was lost in translation. Please wait for the full story to emerge before jumping to any conclusions about Jonas or Newcastle United.
