Mathieu Debuchy crashed out of the World Cup last night before appearing to confirm that he is heading to Arsenal in this summer’s transfer window.

The Newcastle defender was unable to stop Germany from triumphing over his France side in the first World Cup quarter-final, as Mats Hummels’ header proved the difference between the teams.

In the post-match interviews, the 28-year-old told French media that he is heading to the Emirates Stadium once he returns to England, ending an 18-month stay at St James’ Park.

It will not come as a surprise to any Newcastle fans that Debuchy is leaving, as interest in him has always been high since he arrived from Lille. Roma and PSG were rumoured destinations for the defender but Arsenal have put the money – just short of £8m – on the table as they seek a replacement for Bacary Sagna.

There is little doubt that Debuchy is a decent right-back and has been one of the better players to come through the doors at St James’ Park in recent years but I highly doubt any fans will lose much sleep over him leaving.

He was never the most committed player and was seen waving to fans and throwing his shirt into the crowd on the last day of last season – obvious signs of him having played his last game for Newcastle months before any move actually materialised.

In all honesty Debuchy probably wouldn’t have ever signed for Newcastle had his best mate Yohan Cabaye not been there.

Despite his natural attacking talents, Debuchy frustrated with his defensive liabilities and overly aggressive nature – his sending off against Liverpool in his first season a particular bugbear.

The Frenchman will leave for the Emirates Stadium officially in the next few days and will likely be welcomed back to St James’ Park in March with a chorus of boos. Debuchy never truly wanted to play for Newcastle United and for that, we say good riddance.

Sour Grapes young man don’t make good comments. He played for Newcastle, you’ve earned £3M on his transfer. If you are angry have a go at the manager or the owner.

There’s no sour grapes Alf, he’s just another player departing the club that the fans won’t be bothered by.
