This weekend brought rumours linking Manchester City defender Micah Richards with a move to Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old is out of favour at the Etihad Stadium and a move away from Manchester is on the cards, with St James’ Park one of the rumoured destinations.

As Richards is a primarily a right-back, the rumour also casts doubt over the future of Mathieu Debuchy, who continued to attract interest from French giants PSG and Roma. The Italian side are currently managed by Rudi Garcia, who was in charge of Lille when Debuchy was there and is understood to be keen to link up with the defender again.

Richards has one year left on his City contract, making a move in the summer the most likely time to switch. Whether or not Newcastle will have the funds or the pulling power to attract Richards is another thing, but reportedly there will be money to spend for Alan Pardew at the end of the season.

There is sure to be competition for the part-time England international, with a number of foreign clubs also interested in securing his services but Newcastle’s promise of first-team action (especially if Debuchy moves on) could be key to them landing Richards.
