It’s almost summer, the transfer rumours are flying and this one could be a biggie.

Wayne Rooney to Newcastle United anyone?

It may sound like the most ambitious of pipe dreams, but the 27-year-old has handed in a transfer request at Manchester United and a story on Mike Ashley’s website (www.sportsdirectnews.com) has revealed low-level talks have already begun, with the Magpies hierarchy already sounding out talks with Rooney’s representatives.

You may remember Newcastle being interested in Rooney when he left Everton for Old Trafford as an 18-year-old but being snubbed despite offering the Toffees a larger transfer fee. Nine years later, Rooney could be on the move again and Newcastle are ready to break the bank to get him.

This could just be a PR stunt from Ashley’s team (and who could blame them, it’s certainly going to work), with many overseas clubs looking to secure Rooney’s signature for themselves.

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Monaco are all looking at the England man for their sides, but could Newcastle be in with a shout if Rooney doesn’t fancy a move across the channel?

He looks like the kind of lad that would enjoy a greasy kebab down the Quayside, so why not?

One should take this rumour with more than a generous pinch of salt but it’s certainly something to get Geordie tongues wagging early in the transfer window.
